Are corporate SD managers too risk averse or too eager?
Too risk averse: SD managers need to be encouraged to experiment with new, higher-productivity approaches (tools, languages, frameworks) in small, non-critical projects.
Too eager: SD managers need to be given a reality check and stop chasing after the latest and greatest fad

I think it should be noted where each case is acceptable. If there is time or allowance for disruption you should most definitely chase newer technologies. If you're in a maintenance mode (just fixing bugs, cleaning up, etc) or you're writing pieces for a long term application, it seems better to use technologies proven before in the company. That doesn't necessarily mean they can't be a little bleeding edge, just that they should probably be used in a prototype or other application first. It's about growing the company's repetoire in the right stages.
